Unit 1.1 The Age of Exploration

NCDPI Standard 8.C.1.1: Explain how influences from Africa, Europe, and the Americas impacted North Carolina and the United States (e.g. Columbian Exchange, slavery, and the decline of the American Indian populations)

The Age of Exploration

The 15th century marked a period of time when European powers such as Spain, Portugal, and eventually Britain and the Netherlands began exploring other parts of the world.

What began as a search for trading partners and goods led to a desire to expand their power as well, and they began to engage in colonization. As these European nations began to prosper, the natives in the colonies were not always as fortunate.

This slideshow focuses on the early expeditions to the Western Hemisphere, specifically Central and North America, in the late 1400s into the 16th century.
