Course Syllabus
Intermediate Art (Art 2) Syllabus
Course Overview
In Intermediate Art, we begin to explore and master several different media using the compositional knowledge learned in Beginning Art, regarding the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. There will be 9 major projects, sketchbook assignments, in-class writing assignments, continued learning of art history and further development in critical analyses of personal and peer artwork.
Rules
- Students are expected to comply with the student handbook.
- Be on time and ready to participate in class.
- Treat everyone with respect and the way you would like to be treated.
- Maintain a reasonable volume (when talking is permitted).
- Clean up after yourself and take care of art supplies.
- No food. Water is permitted with a lid or cap, but not on the table.
- Cell Phone Policy: Cell phones are to be used for educational purposes only. If you have a question about whether or not I consider it to be educational, please ask. You may listen to music with headphones during INDEPENDENT work, but your volume must be low, or you must have one earbud out so that you can hear possible instructions.
Consequences
For phone:
If I see you using it for something I determine is not educational (texting, social media, games, listening to music during instruction or class discussion/collaboration), I will ask for it and lock it in the closet until the end of class. (NO WARNINGS). If you refuse to relinquish it, I will be forced to call an administrator. If this occurs on a regular basis, I will call your parent/guardian and begin holding your phone/MP3 player until the end of the day.
For minor offenses of class disruption (out of seat, talking, using bad language, failure to clean art supplies, etc.):
- Warning
- separation from classmates/phone call home
- detention
- referral
Certain behaviors may warrant an immediate detention or discipline referral (without previous warnings). Disrespect to the teacher, fighting/threats against other students, etc. are examples of behavior that will immediately receive a harsher consequence.
Supplies Needed: A sketchbook (this can be partially used from a previous art class), paper and pencils. Some students may choose to purchase their own assortment of paintbrushes, but this is not required.
Grading System
Grades will be based on a points system. Some assignments will be worth more points than other assignments. Please feel free to ask questions if something is unclear.
You will see 3 categories in the gradebook, and each category has its own weight. These categories are titled Visual Literacy, Contextual Relevancy and Critical Response.
Visual Literacy (weighted 50%) will generally be projects, your “my choice” exploration, drawings and sketchbook assignments. Visual Literacy is about learning how to communicate and express ideas through art. All assignments that demonstrate understanding of this will fall into this category.
Contextual Relevancy (weighted 25%) will mostly include assignments related to art history (graphic organizers, quizzes and writing assignments). Contextual relevancy refers to applying knowledge of the visual arts in relation to history, culture, heritage and other disciplines. All assignments that demonstrate knowledge and understanding of this will fall into this category.
Critical Response (weighted 25%) will include verbal and written critique assignments (critiques of your work, the work of your peers and the work of other notable artists.
Late Work:
Students will be given adequate time to complete work during class. Late work will receive a deduction of points each day it is late. You can earn late points back by cleaning the classroom. This will be done under the direction of Mrs. Lampson. Missing/Late work will be entered in as a 0 until the work is submitted. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for work that is missing due to absence(s).
