Introduction

In this lesson, students read and analyze a complex text, focusing specifically on the ways the author structures the text by developing and connecting supporting claims. To accomplish this, students use graphic organizers to state the central idea and explain (1) how the writer introduces and develops each claim, (2) how each claim connects to the one before it, and (3) how each claim connects to the central idea.

🥅Learning Objectives / Content Standards

Students will be able to analyze how an author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed, and the connections that are drawn between them (RI 9-10.3).
Students will be able to analyze how an author’s ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text (RI 9-10.5).
Students will be able to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what an informational text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text (RI 9-10.1).
