As part of our introductory lessons on slavery please read Black and White, a chapter from A Young People's History of the United States. In this reading, you will be provided information on how and why slavery came to exist in North America. Along with explaining the origins of slavery in the New World, you will be asked to reflect on some of the vocabulary that is commonly used when slavery is discussed.
Please read this whole selection carefully. We will have a class discussion based on this reading, and there will be an additional reflection-related assignment given next week. Your responses on this assignment should be thorough, thoughtful, and in your own words.

Special note: In this reading, it is easy to get the impression that indigenous tribes were not enslaved. This is not the case. When discussing Native Americans, this chapter focuses on the experience in the Jamestown, Virginia area rather than telling the story of native peoples as a whole.
