The Day I Was Born

This assignment will launch us from our introductory "getting-to-know-you" activities into the world of social studies. This is also my first opportunity to see your ability to use websites as a research tool.

In this activity, you will focus on a single day of the calendar - your birthday. You will be responsible for finding information about the specific date you were born, plus uncovering historical information about other things that happened on your birthday throughout the years.  The format for this assignment will be a Google Slides presentation.

*Special note: Wikipedia is considered an informal resource and is therefore not appropriate to rely upon for most research.  At the end of your instructions, I have linked some reliable websites for use in this assignment. I have also provided a fully completed example for you to use as a guide!

Directions:

1) Open the file with Google Slides template that has been set up for you.

2) Choose your background theme

3) Fill in the 5 slides that already have headings with the following information:

• Title Slide
  • Include your full name in your title
  • You can be creative with your formatting to capture interest!
• That Magical Day
  • Talk to your family members to see what they recall about the day you were born and/or do a little research about what was popular on that particular day in history
  • Record interesting information and include baby pictures of yourself if you can
• I Share a Birthday With...
  • Do research on reliable websites to find out which famous people (living or dead) have the same birthday
  • Include photos and brief descriptions of 3-4 of your birthday-mates
• The Headlines From...(put your own full birthdate in the title, including the year)
  • Do research on reliable websites to uncover the big news stories from the day you were born
  • Give a brief summary of the day's headlines (this could be local, state, national, or world events)
  • Include images of actual newspaper front pages (if possible) or images that represent the news of the day
• On ... (insert your birthday) in Other Years
  • Do research on reliable websites to discover famous things from other years in history that happened on your birthday
  • You will find LOTS of events as you search, but I only want you to summarize 6-8 that you find interesting
  • Include a few historical images!

4) Submit your finished presentation. Recall how we did this in the "Help ME Know YOU" assignment.
