The Cold War Begins After World War II ended, the world began to change dramatically. The nations of Europe had been devastated by the great battles of world war II. Many nations spiraled into poverty as they tried to rebuild their lives. Two nations however, exited World War II even more powerful than before. Both the United States and the Soviet Union had become industrial powerhouses, each boasting a large production system and a massive military. Though these nations had been allies during World War II, it was a relationship of necessity. The Soviet Union and the United States were a real threat to each other due to their vastly contrasting systems of Government. The United States was a free republic which operated its economy on a free market system known as capitalism. The Soviet Union on the other hand, used a system known as communism. This system operates off a government controlled market. In the communist system how much things cost, how many products are available for purchase, and how much people get paid for their services is all controlled by the state. Adversely, in a capitalist system how much people need a product determines its cost. In a free Republic like the United States, our leaders are elected by the people. However in a communist system whoever holds the most power controls the government. A communist system may hold elections however many times their is only one candidate on the ballot. If a free republic like the USA were to influence too many citizens of a communist nation, the leaders of that nation might be voted out. Thus the Soviet Union began to spread communist governments throughout the world and the United States continually sent in troops to stop communist expansion. |
