1.) Compare the use of Buffalo by the Native Americans to that of the Western Hunters. Be specific tell the different uses.
2.) Give me 2 of the 3 inventions that closed the West. Tell how they impacted the development of the US.
3.) Give two of the 3 groups of Immigrants and how they impacted the West.
4.) Cowboys were predominantly of what two groups?
5.) What did the West offer for African Americans? 4 things....
*1. Native Americans used all parts of the Buffalo with no waste. The meat was a food source, bone was turned into weapons, hide became clothing and teepees, sinews were used as bow strings. The Western Hunter only cared about the hide, that could be sold and used to make Drive Belts, coats and shoes.
2. Barbed wire prevented the free ranging of cattle and effectively closed the west. The Sears Mail Order Catalog presented the opportunity to get goods shipped directly to you via the Railroad, things that you did not have access to in the west.
3. The Chinese and Irish immigrants both worked on the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Hispanic immigrants were predominantly cowboys that provided beef to the East.
4. The vast majority of the cowboys were Hispanic & African-American.
5. African Americans that went West could become Homesteaders, Cowboys, Railroad workers, and even join the Army and become Buffalo Soldiers.*
