A Nation Divided (Civil War)

8.H.2.1 - Explain the impact of economic, political, social, and military conflicts on the development of North Carolina and the United States.

We have already seen states that were part of the Union (better known as the United States) remove themselves from membership (Secession) and form their own system of Government.

According to the Constitution... this was an illegal action.

Many of the men serving in the US Military held their allegiance to their state over the National Government. This Meant that officers, cadets at military academies,  the rank and file soldiers would part ways from the US Government Military and Serve in their State Army if their state  Seceded.

To make matters worse, South Carolina  attacked a Federal Fort in their harbor.
