Assignment: After watching the video:
1.What decisions made by president Madison lead to war? (What was the Main Cause of the War of 1812?)
* The British orders of Council required American to pay a tax in British ports before being able to trade goods with other European Nations. Madison's response was to invade Canada. Expand our territory into Canada and liberate them from British rule. The true cause of the War was the US desire for Canada.
2. Why do you think the British burned the White House? * It was in response to the Sacking of York (Toronto) & revenge for War of Independence.
3. What did the President's wife do to preserve history?
* Risked her own life going back into the burning building to rescue famous paintings of George Washington and Martha, as well as other presidential paintings.
4. Explain the battle between the USS Constitution and the HMS Guerriere? How were the Americans able to win?
* Pocket-Battleships were lighter and faster equipped with more cannons and men even though smaller. Built with unique wood composite hulls that made than stronger than any British Ship. USS Constitution fired 2 cannonballs per cannon shot into the HMS Guerriere from broadside knocking out her main sails and mast. Then got IN front of her and raked the ship long ways causing more damage, until they surrendered.
5. The Battle of New Orleans took place after there was a truce treaty, Why do you think it happened?
* Treaty took place 2 weeks before the battle occurred. It takes 2 weeks to the sail across the Atlantic + 8 days to spread the word from Washington Dc to New Orleans LA. That meant that Jackson only found out the war was over 8 days after the battle took place.
