5 Regions of North Carolina

Mountain, Piedmont, Sandhills, Inner Coastal Plain, Tidewater

Mountain Region Links to an external site.- The Western part of the state is the Mountain Region. The Blue Ridge Mtns. separate the Piedmont Region from the Mtn. Region.

Piedmont Region Links to an external site.- Piedmont is a French word meaning "foot of the mountain." Middle Region between Coastal Plain & Mountain Region. (This is our Region)

  • The land of the Piedmont is called a plateau because it is high and mostly flat.

Sandhills- Rolling, sandy hills extending south into South Carolina & Georgia, characterized by very sandy and clay soil. Longleaf pines are native to this area

Coastal Plain Links to an external site.- The Inner Coastal Plain, a higher, drier area, begins west of the Tidewater. The rich, sandy soil here is some of the state's best farmland.

Tidewater- The area along the coast close to sea level. The mouths of the major streams and rivers empty into sounds or the ocean. This includes the Swamps of NC.

All rivers East of the Mountain Region Flow East to the coast (Ocean)

All River in Mountain Region Flow West into the Tennessee & Ohio Rivers to the Gulf of Mexico.
