The New Republic 1789-1800
Conflicts in the North West Territory
Due to the treat of Paris, the US won a large mass of land, north and west of the Ohio River to the Mississippi River. British troops still had forts in the area, but promised to pull out. Before they did they gave guns and ammunition to the Native Americans, in hopes to prevent America from expanding.
A Struggle Over Lands
Several Native American groups banded together to oppose settlement of the land. The Government stepped in to buy the Natives off the land. By 1790, Most of Kentucky and parts of Tennessee were bought from the Tribes living there. But North of the Ohio River was a different story. The Native Tribe refused to sell and white settlers kept moving into Native lands. The Indians attacked the settlers, and the Army had to get involved. The Miami Nation and Shawnee went to battle against the American Army. For over a year the Natives kept winning battles against the Army, but at Fallen Timbers the Tide turned. The battle broke the Natives hold on the region and resulted in a treaty
The 1795 Treaty of Greenville, leaders of the defeated Native American Nations gave up most of their lands from the Ohio River in the south to Lake Erie in the north. (the state of Ohio today)
