Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades and Math 1. This course deepens and extends understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential and quadratic phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. In addition to studying bivariate data, students also summarize, represent and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable. The geometry standards that appear in this course formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences to explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. The Standards for Mathematical Practice apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, require that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. This course prepares students for success in Math 2. The final exam is teacher made and counts as 20% of the semester grade.

Grading Policy:

When checking grades use the grade in Powerschool not the grade in Canvas. Each nine weeks will be graded as follows:

50% Tests, Quizzes and Projects
50% Classwork and Homework

The semester grade is averaged

40% First Nine Weeks
40% Second Nine Weeks
20% Final Exam

Grading Scale:

A - 90 to 100 B - 80 to 89 C - 70 to 79 D - 60 to 69 F - 0 to 59

Notes and Assignments will be comprised of 9 individual units. Students are expected to keep neat, orderly notes including handouts and homework.

Classwork is an integral part of this course. It consists of notes, small group/individual activities, and being an active participant in class discussions. Classwork is due the day of class.

Homework will be given most days and is due the following day by the end of class. Homework assignments are directed toward developing independent inquiry and self study. The amount of time needed to complete homework will vary day to day but generally should take less than 30 minutes. Late homework will be accepted up until the day of that unit’s test, but with a 25% penalty. Any assignment completed after the unit test will incur a 50% penalty. No grades will be accepted after the end of each nine weeks.

Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Tests may be open notes, so taking good notes is a benefit for you. Tests will be given in Canvas. Phones must be surrendered on test days. Tests may only be taken in class with the teacher. Cheating on a test will result in a zero for that test. Having a phone out during a test is considered cheating and a zero will be given for that test.

IF NOT IN CLASS FOR ANY REASON Students are expected to complete assignments by the due dates. Most assignments will be available online through Canvas. If a quiz or test is missed then the student needs to schedule a time to make up the test. If there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow students to complete work for missed classes please contact the teacher as soon as possible. When missing classes for school sponsored activities or because of suspension the student is responsible for obtaining their assignments and completing them by the due dates.

Exiting the classroom will only occur after each work area has been put back in order and calculators have been returned. Students will be dismissed by the teacher, not the bell. There will be NO congregating at the door before the dismissal bell.

Cell/Electric Device Phone Policy: Students should place their phone in the designated holder when entering the classroom. Students will not be allowed to have air pods, earbuds, headphones or other non-school provided electronic devices during class. Students will be required to turn their cell phones into the teacher on test days. Failure to do so will be considered non-compliance and a school administrator will handle the consequences. Cell phones will be returned to students when ALL tests are completed.

Classroom Expectations:

Be Prompt - be in class on time and ready to work when the bell rings.
Be Prepared - bring the necessary materials to class each day ready to work
Be Respectful - to ourselves, classmates, teachers, staff and school property
Be Attentive - Do not prevent someone else from learning due to your talking or off task behavior. Raise your hand and wait quietly to be recognized.
